July 4th Celebrations - Firework Laws

Cheverly Police Department
Fireworks
With July 4th around the corner, the Cheverly Police Department wanted to remind everyone about the rules and regulations, as they apply to fireworks.

In Prince George’s County, the manufacturing, possession of, storing, selling, discharging, using, or burning of ANY type of firework is illegal, except for displays that have been authorized via a permit issued by the State Fire Marshal. Illegal fireworks include, but are not limited to:

• Firecrackers
• Cherry bombs
• Black Cats
• M80s
• Roman Candles
• Bottle Rockets
• Sky Lanterns
• Sparklers
• Any fireworks that launches a projectile
• Any firework that explodes
• Ground based fireworks

Individuals who possess or discharge illegal fireworks are subject to fine of up to $250.

Individuals who sell fireworks without a permit are subject to a fine of up to $1,000.

In addition, although fireworks may be legal in neighboring states, carrying illegal fireworks across state lines, into Maryland, is a crime.

Due to COVID-19, many of the well known annual celebrations have been cancelled. However, the Office of the State Fire Marshal has published a list of Public Firework Displays (click to view - updated as of 06/25/2020).

It is advised that individuals reach out to organizers, beforehand, for up-to-date details and safety protocols.

Remember, safety should be priority for all individuals seeking to celebrate this July 4th.
