Tree Canopy

As Cheverly’s tree canopy ages, the need for a comprehensive tree maintenance and planting program has become a priority. The Town has retained the services of well-respected consulting arborist, Dr. Tolbert Feather, to assist Public Works Director, Steve Brayman, in this effort. Town trees that, due to disease and decay, are in need of removal are an important area of focus.

Director Brayman has worked with Dr. Feather and the Cheverly Green Infrastructure Committee to develop a prioritized list of street and park trees requiring attention. The Town has contracted with Excel Tree Experts for pruning and removal beginning in the next few weeks, with a tentatively scheduled start date of Tuesday 5/12 or Wednesday 5/13.

Although there is no question that the prioritized trees need to be removed, we appreciate that the loss of some of our large street trees will certainly be felt in the landscape. Therefore, a focused public and private tree planting program is a critical component of the Town’s focus.

Please note the Department of Public Works will be undertaking a vigorous planting program over the next several years. We will also be reaching out for your help to preserve, restore, and grow our hallmark tree canopy. Our 10-year goal is to plant at least 1,000 trees. To date, almost 100 trees have been planted, including the replanting of the Bellamy Oak at Bellamy Park this past Arbor Day (April 24, 2020).

You are encouraged to review the Public Works tree page here. On this page you will find Dr. Feather’s recommend tree maintenance and details regarding the trees to be removed. Please do not hesitate to forward any questions you may have to PWTrees@cheverly-md.gov.
