Town Closures

As of this morning, May 8, Prince George’s County has 8840 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 297 people have died of COVID-19. In our community, we understand these are not numbers, but are lives, and stories, family, neighbors, and friends. All key indicators reveal that our county is still in the middle of this situation and none of our indicators support relaxing our stance. To do so would place lives at significant risk and threaten to set back our hopes of a sustainable opening and recovery.

For now, Town courts, fields, and playgrounds remain closed. There is no reasonable way to distance within these spaces, no feasible and sustainable way to disinfect the spaces and equipment, and open playground and court spaces invite people to congregate, confusing everyone when physical distancing is recognized as an essential component of keeping our communities safe.

The Town will make decisions on our spaces independently of the opening of State parks and playgrounds. Town staff leaders have been engaged and carefully considering every aspect of COVID-19 throughout the past several months.

Our community embraces nature and health, so we invite you continue enjoying being outdoors and to use the community trails.  We simply request that everyone practice proper distancing so that we can continue to keep each other safe and protect against community transmission.

Just as with the Town, the M-NCPPC playgrounds throughout the County also remain closed. Further, they have announced their decision to cancel their traditional summer camp programming in its entirety, including Summer Day Camps and Extended Care, Summer Playgrounds, Xtreme Teen and Safe Summer Centers, as well as all events and classes that were scheduled for June.

Thank you for continuing to be patient and supportive. We all are COVID-19 weary to varying degrees, but our actions are important. These past weeks have revealed the truth that we are the actual front line in controlling this pandemic. What we do determines what happens next. Our doctors, nurses, first responders and essential employees cannot control but can only respond to what our actions bring about. Together, we can carry this through and take the time to do this right.
