Town of Cheverly Operational Status

NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS
March 17, 2020
Town of Cheverly – Operational Status

The State of Maryland and Prince George’s County are both operating under a State of Emergency to protect public health, and safety and limit the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in Maryland. The Town of Cheverly has been developing a comprehensive and responsive COVID-19 plan over the past several weeks. In order to enable effective Town response, Mayor and Council passed an emergency ordinance at the March 12th Town Meeting supporting continuity of operations, allowing for changes in service delivery as conditions warrant, supporting community and staff health, and providing economic support for Town staff.

On March 16, 2020 Governor Hogan ordered all bars, restaurants, movie theatres, and gyms close to help slow down the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the state of Maryland. Some drive-thrus will remain open. Carry-out and food delivery service will still be available. Businesses that provide essential services, such as grocery stores, pharmacies, and banks will remain open.

Out of consideration for employee health and safety, the Town of Cheverly has modified operations and is implementing social distancing in each department to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Social distancing has reduced the number of employees reporting for duty to the minimum necessary to allow the continuation of services. Please note and share with your neighbors the modifications below per each department:

Administration:
  • All in-person Town sponsored (or co-sponsored) events are canceled. This cancellation will extend until March 31st. At the end of March, we will reevaluate and determine if conditions warrant an extension.
  • Restrict public access to Town facilities (Town Hall, Police Department, Public Works Building) to authorized personnel ONLY.
  • The Town of Cheverly strongly supports getting outdoors for physical activity, however during this uncertain time to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 effective immediately, all Town-owned playground equipment will be restricted from use indefinitely.
  • Particularly to community organizations, all key fobs have been temporarily deactivated; we will inform you when building access is reinstated. We have created a Special Electronic Newsletter for information about COVID-19 via the Town’s website.
  • All training and work-related travel has been postponed.

Public Safety:
  • Effective immediately, officers will be implementing a telephone reporting protocol for certain non-violent offenses. In these situations, you may be transferred to or receive a call from, an officer who will take a report over the telephone and provide you with all necessary information to obtain a report once it is complete.
  • Anyone wishing to make a payment, obtain a police report or any other administrative assistance, shall call the administrative office rather than walk into the police department. All fees associated with vehicle releases, and late fees related to fines, subsequent to the state of emergency, have been waived in an effort to alleviate any need to visit the police department.
  • Please familiarize yourself with Maryland Governor, Lawrence Hogan’s Executive Order (Read the emergency order).
  • A person who knowingly and willfully violates this Order is guilty of a misdemeanor and on conviction is subject to imprisonment not exceeding one year or a fine not exceeding $5,000 or both.
  • These changes are to be strictly adhered to by our staff and will remain in effect until the declared state of emergency is terminated and the catastrophic health emergency is rescinded.

Public Works:
  • Will continue services of sanitation, yard waste, recycling, and bulk trash collection. During this time, the Department will not be able to complete other duties.
  • Provide limited collection of trash from parks during this social distancing period of time.
