Time to Think Trees — Meeting Reminder

Public Meeting this Saturday!

You are invited and encouraged to attend!

The Public Works Department is hosting a public meeting on Saturday, March 7, 2020 from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm at the American Legion, 3608 Legion Drive, Cheverly, MD, to support Cheverly residents in inquiring about Town trees that have been evaluated and listed for pruning and removal

The Department of Public Works is working with Dr. Tolbert Feather regarding tree maintenance for street trees and some park trees.  Dr. Feather is a well-known expert arborist, and he has substantial experience working with towns in Maryland.

We are reviewing our Town trees from a safety perspective and necessary tree maintenance.  Dr. Feather has assisted the Town in evaluating the Town’s street trees and many park trees.  Dr. Feather has recommended tree maintenance that includes tree pruning and tree removals.

Dr. Feather will be present at the March 7 meeting to help explain about tree maintenance and his recommendations, and representatives from the Green Infrastructure Committee are also planning to be available.  The tree pruning and removal lists will be discussed with the Mayor and Town Council before work begins.

A special webpage contains the tree lists for priority 1a, priority 1b, and priority 2 removals, as well as a list of tree pruning.  The tree removal lists include pictures and a brief description explaining why the tree is listed for removal.

The Town is committed to public process before acting on any tree removals.
Residents are encouraged to review the list of trees scheduled for maintenance or removal and bring any questions to the public tree meeting. This link also includes an initial list of street tree planting locations, 94 of which were planted in this last week.

*Please Note: Within the next few days, trees slated for removal will be marked for identification with a double orange dot.

Cheverly’s tree canopy is suffering, and we are losing more trees than we can currently replace.  This loss threatens the community we all love.  Residents are reminded and encouraged to take advantage of the department’s free private tree planting program where the Town plants a tree in your yard at your request.  The Town of Cheverly would like to see 1000 trees planted within the Town over the next ten years or less. Thanks to Pepco’s recent planting of 94 street trees throughout Cheverly, we only have 906 more trees to go!

Please contact Public Works at PWTrees@cheverly-md.gov with any questions you may have on this matter.
