TOWN OF CHEVERLY AFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO HUMAN RIGHTS AND URGES IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE IN GAZA

Cheverly, Maryland - March 14, 2024 - The Town of Cheverly stands resolute in its unwavering commitment to human rights and urges elected officials to join the global call for an immediate permanent ceasefire in Gaza. Through landmark Resolution R-2-24, the Town underscores its support for the safety, dignity, and equality of all people, irrespective of faith, race, ethnicity, or nationality.

Recognizing the critical need for lasting peace and justice in the region, Cheverly acknowledges the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, where tens of thousands have lost their lives and millions face displacement, homelessness, and starvation. The Town of Cheverly aligns itself with esteemed international bodies such as the World Health Organization, the United Nations, and Human Rights Watch, in calling for a permanent ceasefire and immediate provision of humanitarian aid.

Nicole Bryner, Ward 3 Council Member of Cheverly, emphasized, "As local leaders, we have a moral obligation to confront injustice wherever it arises, and to respond to our community’s calls for action. We urge our elected representatives across all levels of government to use their influence to end the suffering of innocent civilians and save both Israeli and Palestinian lives."

The resolution calls on elected leaders at the municipal, county, state, and federal levels to take decisive action. Copies of the resolution will be sent to key officials, including County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, Governor of Maryland Wes Moore, and President Joseph Biden, urging them to prioritize efforts to broker peace and facilitate humanitarian aid.

The Town of Cheverly reiterates its solidarity with communities affected by conflict worldwide and reaffirms its commitment to promoting peace, justice, and human rights.
