LOSS OF LIFE OF CHEVERLY POLICE OFFICER

CHEVERLY, MD – This morning, the Cheverly Police Department (CPD) learned about the heartbreaking loss of one of our police officers, while off duty. We are forever changed by this devastating news. We also know that the officer’s family is forever changed. We ask that you please hold the officer's loved ones in your thoughts and prayers. Please also take a moment to send kind thoughts to the officers of CPD, who are mourning this loss.

The Chief and I have both spent a total of almost four decades in policing and we know that being a police officer is a difficult job. The work they do every day to protect Cheverly comes with additional stressors. Despite this, they continue to put their lives on the line, while balancing the care of their families and themselves. We must always remember that these officers are also human. As humans, they also have fears, personal trials, pains, as well as joys and successes. This incredibly difficult loss reminds us that we need to remember to encourage one another and show empathy, grace, and mercy at all times.

My heart aches for the entire CPD family who are grieving. We are committed to ensuring that all officers have access to the support they need to cope with this loss as well as have the services they need to address their mental health. Please seek help if you need support.

I have asked that all members of the CPD be required to participate in the town’s EAP program. EAP resources will also be available to all our other employees impacted by this loss.
