Hospital Hill Site Abatement and Demolition Contract Update

The Hospital Hill Development Team recently awarded the site abatement and demolition contract to Maryland-based Berg Corp. (bergdemo.com), a firm that specializes in complex abatement and demolition projects.

The Berg team was expected to begin mobilizing on-site on Wednesday, November 15th, to begin their initial site preparation work, activities that will include:

  • The installation of a metal safety fence around the entirety of the work site, further securing the complex from unauthorized access.
  • Creation of entrance and exit gates at selected points along the fence for employees and equipment, which will be controlled during the day and securely locked at night.
  • Laying down the equipment to be used for the abatement.
The initial months of abatement work should have a low impact on the community, consisting mostly of internal asbestos removal tasks performed by fully licensed and trained workers. The abatement work will follow strict federal and state regulations and will be overseen by third-party hygienists to ensure the work is safe for the workers and the nearby residents.
All activities will occur inside the perimeter/security fence, and noise associated with this work will be constantly monitored - and, where possible, minimized - by the contracting team, whose years of successful projects in dense urban environments played a part in their selection.

The abatement work is expected to continue through February 2024, when extensive demolition is expected to begin. The demolition of the hospital complex is expected to be completed by November 2024. We will provide regular updates as the status on site progresses.

Finally, we are pleased that the Town of Cheverly and Berg Corp. will coordinate, as the Department of Public Works will be storing trucks and equipment on a portion of the site outside the security fence while the new Public Works Garage is under construction. This Memorandum of Understanding between the Town and the Redevelopment Authority of Prince George’s County also has the Cheverly Police Department actively patrolling the entire site.
