Listening Session on National Register of Historic Places Process

You are invited and encouraged to participate in an informal listening session to respond to community interest in the ongoing National Register of Historic Places process here in Cheverly.

Time: 7:00 pm
Date: Wednesday, 12 February, 2020
Where: American Legion Post 108
3608 Legion Dr, Cheverly, MD 20785

The Planning Department staff and the Historic Preservation Chair are interested in receiving your input on opportunities for honoring a fuller and more representative history of our Cheverly community.

Cheverly’s National Register of Historic Places nomination acknowledges the original seven plats, 226 acres, 557 contributing residential properties, three contributing non-residential building, four contributing parks, and two contributing sites/objects. The designation would not place restrictions or conditions on properties. The Historic Preservation Commission has looked favorably on Cheverly’s nomination. The nomination process has been paused to support further community engagement. Our Cheverly community has many stories to tell. We have both much to celebrate, and a responsibility to powerfully engage the very real and difficult truths that a close look at our past reveals. Taking time to discuss ways we can tell our full story is important, as it reflects a commitment to listen, respect, and include each other voices and experiences.

Backgound: Via Resolution 1-18 adopted May 24, 2018, the Town of Cheverly resolved to apply for financial assistance to the Prince George's County Planning Department for preparation of a draft nomination seeking Cheverly’s inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. The Prince George’s County Planning Department approved the application in June and M-NCPPC engaged The Ottery Group as a consultant (contract amount of $33,430). Beginning in fall 2018, team members from Ottery undertook the survey, research, photography, documentation and writing work required to prepare Cheverly’s nomination for consideration.
