David Tansey is a longtime member of the Cheverly community, having lived here as a child and returned to raise his family. He was elected to represent Ward 4 in 2025. David teaches high school math and personal finance in DC Public Schools and has been a DCPS educator since 2009.
He is a former Math for America Master Teaching Fellow (2012–2017) and has consistently advocated for students and educators. He has testified before the DC Council and State Board of Education in support of free student transit, growth-based school metrics, and budgeting reforms that promote school stability. In 2018, he served on DC’s Graduation Task Force, pushing for a personal finance graduation requirement and more transparent, parent-friendly student progress reports. From 2011 to 2021, he served on the PTA of his neighborhood elementary school, encouraging residents to engage with and support their local schools.
David holds a B.A. in Government and Politics from the University of Maryland, where he graduated from the Honors College with a concentration in statistical policy analysis, and an M.Ed. in Education Policy and Leadership from American University. Before teaching, he worked at CHF International (now Global Communities), on the Obama primary campaign, and at the Aspen Institute.
In Cheverly, David serves as Committee Chair for the local Cub Scout Pack, coaches youth basketball, and is a former board member and active volunteer with Cheverly Village.
