Public Safety Announcement - Stolen Vehicles/Theft from Autos Issued: August 22, 2025
The Cheverly Police Department reported an increase in stolen vehicles and thefts from vehicles in residential neighborhoods involving individuals targeting newer vehicles equipped with push-to-start systems. These suspects are using technology to clone key fobs, allowing them to bypass security features and steal vehicles. In the most recent incidents, suspects were observed briefly attaching a device to a parked vehicle in a driveway, then returning later. The cloned key fob allowed suspect(s) to unlock and start the vehicle remotely.
To protect your vehicle, we recommend storing key fobs away from doors and windows by keeping them in a metal container or Faraday pouch to block signals. When possible, park in garages and consider using steering wheel locks or other visible deterrents. Installing motion-sensor lighting around parking areas and security cameras for driveways can also help deter criminal activity. Most importantly, be aware of unfamiliar individuals near parked vehicles in your neighborhood. Additionally, park vehicles in well-lit areas of the town whenever possible.
If you encounter the individuals below or anyone who appears suspicious around vehicles, please contact 911 immediately.
The following vehicles have been primarily targeted in these incidents: Acura, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, and Nissan. However, any newer vehicle with push-to-start capability may be at risk.
The Cheverly Police Department will be increasing patrols in residential areas throughout the town to help prevent these crimes.
