Excerpt from Senior Corner by Karren Pope-Onwukwe:
Protecting Our Elderly from Financial Exploitation
Helen Hayes once said, “what becomes fragile when we age is not our bodies as much as our ego” - this is especially true for elderly victims of financial exploitation. Many seniors are exploited by people they know, paid caregivers, neighbors, even relatives. Examples of financial exploitation include: forging signatures on financial documents; making unauthorized withdrawals, coercing individuals into giving away property, tricking people into giving away property, charging excessive fees for services, committing mail, telephone, internet or person-to-person scams. …….
………..Accordingly, this year the Law Foundation of Prince George’s County will kick-off its series of free Elder Law Clinics by holding a forum on Consumer Fraud. The forum will provide information to seniors, caregivers, family and friends. There will be no charge for the clinic/forum, however seating is limited, please call Karren Pope-Onwukwe at 301-864-8354x102to reserve a seat or email pope-onwukwe@lawfoundtionpg.org.
