The Offices of Mayor and all Town Councilmembers will be up for Election.
Election Calendar
Friday, March 20, 2009 Last day for candidates to submit their filing forms
(45 days before the Election).
Friday, April 4, 2009 Voter Registration Closes. (30 days before Election).
Monday, April 27, 2009 Last day to apply for Absentee Ballot. (7 days before Election).
Voters may apply for Emergency Absentee Ballots for medical and work related emergencies that come up during the last 7 days before Election.
VOTER REGISTRATION: Voters registered in Prince George’s County are automatically registered to vote in Town elections. Call the Prince George’s County Voter Registration Hotline 301-627-2811, or download registration forms from www.elections.state.md.us. You can also get registration forms at the Town Office. Registration Books will close on Friday, April 4, 2009.
Candidates for Mayor must be 25 years old on or before the date of election;
» a citizen of the United States;
» a registered voter; and
» a resident of Cheverly for not less than 6 months.
Candidates for Councilmember must be 21 years old on or before the date of election;
» a citizen of the United States;
» a registered voter; and
» a resident of Cheverly for not less than 6 months.
» a resident of the Ward for which they are running, prior either to the date of filing, or 45 days immediately preceding the date of the Election in the case of a write-in candidate.
FILING INSTRUCTIONS for CANDIDATES: Nomination filing forms may be obtained at the Town Office during normal business hours (Monday-Friday, 9AM-5PM) or download the form (see above). Call 301-773-8360 for information. Completed forms must be returned to the Town Office no later than 5:00PM, Friday, March 20, 2009 (45 days before the Election).
Pictures & Profiles of Candidates must be submitted with the nominating petition in order to be included in the April Newsletter.
» Picture should be a closeup—must be cropped to about 2”x2”.
» Candidate Profiles must be brief (no longer than 350 words). Profiles will appear as written. They will not be edited or corrected; however, if the profile is too long, staff will have to shorten it by cutting off at the paragraph closest to the limit.
Please submit on a computer disk or email to: townclerk@cheverly-md.gov. Please attach them as separate files; the Profile as a WORD document, and the Picture as a JPEG file.
ABSENTEE VOTING:
Who may vote by absentee ballot?
» Any qualified voter who will be absent from Cheverly during the entire period the polls are open on election day; or
» Any qualified voter whose physical disability prevents or will prevent the voter from being present and personally voting at the polls on election day.
How do I get an absentee ballot? You must apply for an absentee ballot, in writing, prior to April 27, 2009, (7 days before election). You can obtain an Application from the Town Office. Call 301-773-8360, write to 6401 Forest Road, Cheverly, MD 20785, or come in to the Town Office. When the Cheverly Election Board processes your application and you are determined to be qualified, an absentee ballot will be mailed to you.
EMERGENCY ABSENTEE BALLOT:
Who may apply for an absentee ballot after the deadline?
a. Any qualified voter who is informed within 7 days prior to the election that, as a condition of employment, the voter is required to be absent from Cheverly;
b. Any qualified voter who is unable to be physically present at the polls as a result of illness or accident occurring within 7 days prior to the election;
c. Any qualified voter who is unable to be present because of a death or serious illness in the immediate family occurring within 7 days of the election.
